Sarah Anderson

We have a cabinet full of beautiful jewellery by our favourite jeweller, Sarah Anderson. She creates exquisite collections of quality. But it is also affordable, which is important to us.

She studied at Glasgow School of Art where she gained her Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing, and she is now one of Scotland's most successful jewellers.

Featuring sterling silver and semi precious stones, she uses traditional chain mail techniques which involve weaving the silver link by link, an intricate process. This enables her to create a variety of beautiful finishes.

She is inspired by the colours and textures of the Scottish Highlands, and she often uses freshwater pearls as a contrast to her silver-work.

She lives and works in Fife and we are delighted to be exhibiting her work.  Our customers adore her work and it really does fly out the door.

Pressies

It has been a busy week at the gallery and I'm glad to say that there are a lot of people who will be receiving very lovely Christmas presents!

Blue Moon by Shaun McLaren

As well as several paintings, people have been picking Christmas presents from our collection of applied arts.  We have been selling ceramics, glass and jewellery all to be opened on Christmas Day.  Lucky people!

Wee Jugs by Pauline Zelinski

The beautifully hand-painted ceramics by Pauline Zelinski are always incredibly popular. Bright, beautiful and practical too.  It's always lovely to sell work, but when you know someone has found something special to give to someone else, it adds an extra thrill.

Siamese Cat by Christine Cummings

Our finely made raku ceramic sculptures are always a big hit.  They exude charm but it's the standard of work that makes them so appealing.

And of course the beautiful jewellery by Sarah Anderson is always a big seller. I have chosen several pieces myself, but being given a piece as a gift is even more special.

A Trove of Treasures

To add to our wonderful collection of paintings and to make this year's Winter Exhibition extra special, we also have works by a group of well known applied artists.

Sculpture by Shaun McLaren

I love Shaun McLaren's work.  He works with driftwood and found objects and finesses them into fine and delightful pieces of sculpture.

Glass by Jane Charles

Jane Charles is one of the best glass artists I know.  She creates beautiful bowls and perfume bottles that appear to capture the light around them. Her work is of the finest quality.

Ceramics by Pauline Zelinski

Pauline Zelinski is also one of the finest ceramic artists I know.  She combines beautiful design with hand-painting and creates a wide range from platters, to bowls to jugs.  Each piece is practical, but ultimately a beautiful piece of art.

Ceramics by Anne Morrison

Anne Morrison is a well known ceramicist combining the ancient art of Raku firing with modern design.  The driftwood she often uses is a beautiful complement to the ceramic's dappled glaze.

Sculpture by Christine Cummings

Christine Cummings' love of animals is apparent in her expressive hand-moulded sculptures.  She charmingly captures the character of her subjects, from dogs and cats to sheep and horses.

Jewellery by Sarah Anderson

We have a fabulous collection of jewellery by Sarah Anderson.  She works in exquisite detail with sterling silver creating a variety of chains to beautiful effect.  She also works with freshwater pearls.  Her necklaces and bracelets, beautifully finished with silver charms are very popular at the gallery.

So along with our twenty five painters, I'd say we have the best Winter Exhibition in town!!

Silver Lining

When I love something, I love love love it!  It took me a long time to find a jeweller whose work I loved enough to exhibit at the gallery.

Sarah Anderson is a jeweller and an artist, and it shows in her work.  That is what I was looking for.  Each piece is designed with flair, and exquisitely hand-made in sterling silver or pearl.

Another important aspect to me is affordability.  I wanted beautiful one-off pieces of quality still to be within most peoples' reach.  I realise that sometimes the price of a painting would be stretching the pockets, and it is important to me that unique and beautiful works can be owned by anyone.

These are just a few examples of the work we have on show.  Prices range from £40 for smaller pieces, up to around £240 for the more intricate necklaces.

Sarah also loves input from the customer, and we often work with the client with different elements of the jewellery to create a piece completely unique to them.

Box of Delights

To accompany Laura Harrison's bold and beautiful solo exhibition, we have a fabulous selection of ceramics, sculpture and jewellery.

The colourful ceramics by Pauline Zelinski have been incredibly popular since coming to the gallery.  These individually crafted, hand-painted pieces have flown out the door as presents or personal treats. 

 

Anne Morrison's thoughtful figurative work is at once commanding and contemplative and I always like to see her little figures finding some respite in the warmth of the gallery!



In contrast, we have dynamic sculpture by the wonderful artist Lesley Carruthers.  Sculpted in aluminium with brushed corrian bases, I'm delighted to say that these dramatic pieces have found there way into several art-lovers' homes and gardens.

Our favourite jeweller Sarah Anderson has again come up with a beautiful collection for Spring.  Our cabinet is full of delights, from intricately hand-woven sterling silver designs to delicate pearl pieces.  All hand-made and just a little bit different, her work always attracts a crowd around the jewellery cabinet, and most people end up going home with a piece.

New to the gallery is work by Michael Lythgoe.  Inspired mainly by wildfowl and waders, his stylised representations are sculpted beautifully from wood.  He manages to perfectly capture the individual character of each species, and this elegant collection has drawn much admiration.

Of course we can't forget the gallery's resident pooch who proudly guards the paintings at night!  This beautiful sculpture by Christine Cummings is one of only two left of her collection.

Hidden Treasures

I love discovering something wonderful that I wasn't looking for.  Plans are all well and good, but there is nothing like turning a corner and seeing something unexpectedly beautiful or exciting.  Isn't this what we remember most?

The gallery houses exhibitions of paintings, my first love.  Having been a painter myself, I can't tell you how much I admire the boldness, skill and unbridled talent of the many different painters working in Scotland today.  I am so lucky to have met so many of them, and to be able to showcase their work on the gallery walls.  

Many visitors come to the gallery because they have been invited, or they don't want to miss the exhibition that's currently showing.  It may be it a solo exhibition, a three person, or a large mixed show like the Winter exhibition on at the moment.  But as they slowly walk round and take in the paintings, I see their eye being caught by small treasures that they weren't expecting to see. 

How can any animal lover not notice this little Siamese . . . .

. . . . or this proud pooch?!

And anyone who likes to pour their milk in style in the morning, can't help but have their head turned by these beautifully crafted hand painted jugs!  And if they like those, they will also love this fabulous ceramic platter.

            

The gleam in the jewellery cabinet always draws people in for a closer look.  And many people leave happy with a surprise present for themselves or for another.

My first love is painting, but I'm happy to say there are treasures everywhere, if we just care to look in different directions.

Spoiled For Choice!

Jeweller Sarah Anderson has been working hard to add more sparkle to the gallery with a new collection for Christmas.  A graduate of Glasgow School of Art and a versatile jeweller, she works mainly in Sterling silver and freshwater pearl, creating intricately beautiful, yet affordable pieces.

I absolutely love the silver jewellery.  Each piece is made up of tiny links, expertly chained together to create very different finishes.  The Queens Link is big and bold (I have one of these) . . . . .

The Byzantine Link is small, shiny and delicate, like spun sugar (I have both of these) . . . . .

And the Flatmail Link extravagantly caresses the skin like a delicate chain mail (a Christmas present to myself this year I think!) . . . . .

There are other finishes too, all in bracelets, necklaces and earrings.  She likes each piece to be versatile, so she does a beautiful range of charms in silver and stone and crystal that can be attached.

Her freshwater pearl work is exquisitely matched with silver adornments. Leaf twists or hearts, or a curled silver leaf encasing another pearl.  She also incorporates Swarovski crystal work.

All Sarah's work is beautifully presented in black velvet and satin-lined boxes.  An affordable extravagance!

Oops, now all my girlfriends know what they will be getting for Christmas!
