This exhibition, opening 20th April, is an ode to all beasties, big and small, and in any medium. We have a brilliant line up of artists taking part.

The Collection

We have had a really good response to our new exhibition, The Smithy Gallery Collection, so called because these are the paintings from some of our very favourite artists and gallery collaborators.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

These are paintings that, with the artists' permission, we like to hold onto.  They include David M Martin RSW RGI, Sandy Murphy RSW RGI PAI, Laura Harrison, Joyce Gunn Cairns SSA VAS, Carlo Rossi (1921-2010) and more.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Together they create a really strong body of works that we are honoured to have and would like to think represents the gallery's ethos of quality and unique creativity.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This exhibition continues until 30 March.  Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 11am - 5pm and Sunday, 1pm - 5pm.

The Smithy Gallery Collection

We are busy getting our new exhibition ready for its opening on Saturday.  This is a unique exhibition, The Smithy Gallery Collection.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This exhibition consists of many beautiful works by some of the gallery's favourite artists.  These are the paintings that we hold onto and won't let go!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In 2012 we held a memorial exhibition for the late Carlo Rossi.  One of our favourite artists and a friend of the gallery.  This was the last of three memorial exhibitions held in Britain, organised by Carlo's sons. 

They kindly allowed us to hold onto a few of the smaller painting and the rest of the paintings were distributed amongst the family.  We are delighted to have this opportunity to exhibit these once again.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Another nonagenarian and supporter of the gallery is David M Martin RSW RGI.  David has shown with the gallery since we opened over eight years ago and we have built up a beautiful collection of small to large works of his.  We think David is one of the best painters in Scotland.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Another artist in our special collection is the inimitable Joyce Gunn Cairns SSA VAS.  Edinburgh artist Joyce has become one of Smithy Gallery's most cherished artists.  Deeply talented and exciting, her exhibitions have become a huge draw to all around.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Also part of the collection are works by Joe Hargan PAI and George Grant.  Each artist in the collection has been part of the gallery's history and we are always incredibly proud to be able to exhibit their works.

 

 

 

 

The Smithy Gallery Collection dates are 8th to 30th March.

Mixed Media

We have around eighty paintings in this year's Affordable Art Show and I have noticed that there seems to be a greater spectrum of media than usual.

It is so refreshing to see this variety.  When I opened the gallery eight years ago, I noticed that paintings seemed to be predominantly oils, which is still as popular as ever, but there is room for so much more. 

 

 

 

Monoprint - Alice McMurrough RSW RGI PAI

The greatest addition is probably digital painting, where the computer (slightly more technical than this I think) is used as a medium to create the 'painting'.  Usually a very limited edition of them are printed.  Kevin Low is a great example of how this bold medium can be secondary to the work of art it is used to create.

And from digital, we have the Victorian technique of painting acrylic directly onto wood.  George Grant is best known for this.  He creates scenes on grained wooden panels, resulting in evocative images as if delved deep from the viewer's memories.

I love that these works can hang side by side, also along with mixed media, watercolour, and  many applied arts.

Of course there are no boundaries to creativity, and it's inspiring to see each individual find their medium, if not more than one.

The Affordable Sales!

Our annual Affordable Art Show is now in its sixth year and I think this year could be one of the best. 

We are lucky to have a great variety of artists showing this year and there has been a very enthusiastic response with sales for many different artists.

We are delighted to say that we have now reached over 30 paintings sold with still a couple of weeks to go. Most artists have sold two or even three paintings and this response, particularly at the beginning of the year, creates such a ripple of enthusiasm for the gallery and the artists.

Our lovely applied arts should not be overlooked.  They also have a great appreciation during this exhibition.

Jane Charles creates beautiful glassware and her bowls and perfume bottles have been selling well.

Sarah Anderson

Our resident jeweller, Sarah Anderson is a constant seller, and has been helping many people out with presents and treats for themselves.

 

 

 

Pauline Zelinksi

 

 

Ceramicist Pauline Zelinski's gorgeous range of hand-painted creations have also been flying out the door.

The Preview

This Sunday we had the preview of our annual Affordable Art Show. This is an exhibition of works by some of Scotland's finest artists, and all works are under £500!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 After hanging the exhibition all week and adding the finishing touches we were ready.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As always, you never really know how many people are going to turn up, until they do!  The day went in a blur of happy faces, lots of sales and lots and lots of chatting.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I know I've got a really busy opening when I have to keep turning the music up so it can be heard!

 

 

 



 

 

 

 

It was a delight to sell so many paintings by lots of different artists.  Kevin Low, Gordon Wilson, Henry Fraser, Joyce Gunn Cairns, Sandy Murphy, Laura Harrison, Cathy Campbell, Stanley Bird, Ashley Cook, and I was especially delighted to sell work by Cate Inglis, a first time exhibitor with Smithy Gallery.

 

 

 

It also adds a lot more to the day when the artists come and enjoy chatting to admirers of their work, and each other. Gordon, Stanley, Cate, Cathy, Marion, Carol and others - thank you so much for coming.

 

 

 

Many ceramics and jewellery were also snapped up and taken home.  This for me was one of our best openings.  I love it when a great spectrum of work is appreciated, never mind sold.  Everything I have in the gallery is there because I admire it, love it, or it interests me greatly and to have so many other people echo these feelings, is a great pleasure.  

 

A huge thank you to all the people who came and enjoyed the preview day.  I hope you all had a lovely time.
