'It Happened Last Summer'

The opening of the Carol Dewart exhibition , 'It Happened Last Summer', went with a bang on Sunday!

Carol had been working on this collection of new paintings for a long time and the exhibition looked beautiful.

 

 

 

 

 

All the paintings are intricately patterned scenes from what the artist sees around her every day.  She makes the ordinary extraordinary. Each painting is also cleverly titled after a classic film which seems to add even more drama and individuality.

 

 

Carol's work is incredibly unique and it was no surprise that there was a such a fabulous turnout.

 

 

 

 

And with this fabulous response came fabulous sales.  A quarter of the paintings have been sold already, but thankfully each one is as special as the next, and every person seems to have a different preference.

Coming Next . . . .

We are starting to turn our attention to our next exhibition and we are delighted to be having our second solo exhibition with Carol Dewart.

The Cat and the Canary

 

 

 

Carol graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1981 and has won several awards for her distinctive paintings.

 

 



It's a Wonderful Life

 

 

 

Her striking mixed media paintings feature the natural world, be it felines, birds or foliage.  But mainly they are about light and pattern.

 

 

 



While You Were Sleeping

 

 

 

Texture, pattern and light are the key elements in her paintings.  She says by changing any of these factors a painting can be constantly changing, evolving with little variation in the actual subject matter.

Each work creates an individual world of it's own, as the cinematic titles illustrate.

This striking exhibition opens on 1 March and it's not just for cat-lovers!

Steven Camley

The Steven Camley original watercolour paintings have just arrived at the gallery, beautifully framed. We have sixty-five pieces from this multi award-winning satirical cartoonist. 

Steven has been creating these works five days a week for The Herald for over eleven years, and we have had the privilege of choosing our favourites.

They are beautiful works of art, thought-provoking, and of course, funny.  And there are so many to choose from.  I can tell that this is going to be a really enjoyable exhibition, inspiring conversation and opinion.

This is the first exhibition of this kind that we have had, and the interest has already been overwhelming - and yes, the sales are already starting!

This exhibition opens on Sunday 19 May.  It is being endorsed by famed writer and artist Alasdair Gray who will be present at the opening alongside the artist.

Our current exhibition, Fifty Shades of Glasgow, continues until Sunday 12 May.  A huge thank you to Carol Dewart who has already sold almost half of these gorgeous paintings.  I know that we will have a busy weekend ahead of us though.

Carol Dewart

Carol Dewart's exhibition, Fifty Shades of Glasgow, has sold 21 paintings in the first week and we are absolutley delighted for her well-deserved success.  Here's a little more about this lovely artist.

Carol was born in Scotland in 1957.  She lives in Cardross, Argyll/Bute and as a landscape painter, it is from this ever-changing landscape that she takes her inspiration.

She attained a BA(Hons) in Drawing and Painting from Glasgow School of Art in 1981 and was the winner of the Emmy Sachs Award and the John and Mabel Craig Award. During her Post Graduate year at G.S.A in 1982 under the tutelage of renowned painters, David Donaldson, James Robertson and Geoff Squires, she was awarded a travelling scholarship.

Carol also studied Embroidery and Weaving for one year and this has had a major influence on her work. By integrating the use of various mediums, textiles and stitch work, her paintings strive to give a more textural observation of the landscape.

The Glasgow paintings are executed in watercolour and gouache and are inspired by the many years spent in Glasgow during her student days.

She is an artist member of the Paisley Art Institute and the Glasgow Society of Women Artists.

We have two weeks remaining and 29 paintings available still.  Each as gorgeous as the next.

Sunday's Preview

Our new exhibition Fifty Shades of Glasgow previewed on Sunday and it went with a bang! 

Artist Carol Dewart created the fifty paintings over a period of a good few months and the result has been a fabulous variety of scenes and landmarks in and around Glasgow.

The consistency of sizing has led to a dramatic looking exhibition, each painting an individual gem.

This is the first time we have had an exhibition dedicated to the city, and it was a joy to see the reaction and to hear all the stories linked to where the paintings were depicting.

Exhibiting also is scultptor Lesley Carruthers with a wonderful collection of works in cast aluminium and bronze.

So many people came and enjoyed the opening and we have already sold eighteen of the paintings!

Fifty Shades of . . . . Glasgow!

We are so excited about this new exhibition.  We have been busy hanging all week for it's preview this Sunday.

The artist Carol Dewart came to me with this idea, and I loved it.  She has created fifty small paintings many of which are well known scenes in and around Glasgow, but also others that are details that she has honed in on.

This exhibition is accompanied by a show of works by Lesley Carruthers.  She is a sculptor I have always admired, well known for her large metal installations and garden sculptures.  We are delighted to be exhibiting fourteen pieces of varying sizes.

This exhibition previews on Sunday 21 April, 2-5pm and continues until 12 May.
