Ashley Cook

At Smithy Gallery we love the expression of art in all media.  Ashley Cook is one of Scotland's best known screen print artist.  She also works in the more recent digital medium.  She is currently exhibiting works in our Summer exhibition.

The Lotus Eater

She  graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a First Class BA Hons in 1986 and Postgraduate Printmaking in 1987.  She has since continued to practice as a professional artist, winning awards, exhibiting internationally and undertaking several international residencies.

The Bridal Chamber

Ashley works with a mixture of found images and her own autographic and photographic images; she utilises an eclectic library of personal and archetypal iconography which she reuses, redevelops and manipulates continuously.

Reach for the Moon

She creates works that are narrative, focusing on the human form, with the titles having a central position.  She creates photomontage illusionist environments from many different sources.

Learning Life From Granny's Plates

She uses an intense palette of colour opposites that create a dreamlike and sometimes nocturnal quality to her work.

Life's Riches Traded For Fool's Gold

She has work in a number of prestigious collections nationally and internationally including: the Scottish Arts Council; The BBC, Kelvingrove Museum & Art Gallery, Glasgow; The Vaasa Museum, Finland and Galeria Otra Vez, Los Angeles.

Here Comes Summer

The Steven Camley exhibition ended on Sunday with sales I'm delighted to say, right up to the last minute. A fabulous forty-five sold, and I really didn't want that show to end.

But as the new work began to arrive for our Summer Exhibition, I could feel my head being turned by the most gorgeous works I've seen for a mixed show in a long time.

We have a great line up of artists taking part, and the variety of talent just goes on and on.  Here are just some examples of the quality of work and the spectrum of media that will go to make a joyous collection for June and July.

Colin Brown

Other invited artists include John Kingsley PAI, David M Martin RSW RGI, Sandy Murphy RSW RGI PAI, Kevin Low, Ronald F Smith RSW RGI PAI, Laura Harrison, Joyce Gunn Cairns MBE, Sheila Macmillan and more.

We will also have beautiful sculpture by Shaun McLaren and Lesley Carruthers, ceramics by Pauline Zelinski and jewellery by Sarah Anderson.

Patricia Cain RGI

The gallery will be bursting at the seams with works by some of my favourite artists, and I hope yours too.

Ashley Cook

I have been a fan of Ashley Cook's for a long time and I'm delighted to now be exhibiting her work for the first time in our Affordable Art Show.

Moving Towards a Singularity

Ashley graduated from Glasgow School of Art with First Class BA Hons in 1986 and Postgraduate Printmaking in 1987, and it shows.

Instantly recognisable, her works are intricate, engaging and beautiful. They are predominantly screen prints, but she has moved into the use of digital imagery as well.

La Belle Epoque

She uses an intense palette of colour opposites that create a dreamlike and sometimes nocturnal quality to her work.

9 Out of 10 People Like Chocolate and the 10th May Be a Liar

She is one of the few people who, since graduating, has been a professional artist. She has been very busy winning awards, exhibiting internationally and undertaking many international residencies.

Fly Close To The Sun

Cook has work in a number of prestigious collections nationally and internationally including: the Scottish Arts Council; The BBC, Kelvingrove Museum & Art Gallery, Glasgow; The Vaasa Museum, Finland and Galeria Otra Vez, Los Angeles.

The Garden of Good and Evil

I think her work is quite beautiful. I also like the way the titles are of importance.  As if the imagination hadn't been piqued enough, the title takes you even further away to some place else, even if just for a moment.

Ashley will be exhibiting with us until 24th February.
