Tom Allan

We are delighted to be exhibiting new sculpture by Tom Allan alongside the Joyce Gunn Cairns exhibition.

After The Carnival

Tom trained at Glasgow School of Art and also in Carrara, Italy. Sculpting since 1977, he is a regular exhibitor and prize winner at the RSA, RGI, VAS, and PAI annual open exhibitions

He is one of Scotland's most successful and well known sculptors, working with traditional materials and techniques.

Calm Head

He says, “For me sculpture in stone has been a passion for thirty-seven years. I see it as an expressive art form, shaping stone to convey emotion, as a painter uses colour and form.”

Towards The Lagoon

Tom’s work is in public and private collections in Europe, Australia, and the Americas. He has also participated in many sculpture symposia abroad, as well as organising four in Scotland. Commissions include public art projects in Glasgow and Motherwell, a Holocaust Memorial in Serbia, and the Lord Kelvin Memorial in Glasgow’s Necropolis.

He was elected Associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 2006, and awarded the Diploma of Paisley Art Institute in 2010.

Marble Form

Tom works and teaches at his studio in Gartcosh and also each year in Carrara.

We have six of Tom's sculptures available until 12 October.

Hanging The Exhibition

We are busy hanging the beautiful Joyce Gunn Cairns paintings for her solo exhibition opening this Sunday.

I love to see the gallery change and shift with each exhibition.  Joyce's work has an ethereal quality although it packs quite a punch.

On closer inspection each painting if full of intensity of feeling, be it a figurative painting or a wildlife study.

As we complete the hanging the gallery on taking on a grand and thoughtful mood.  Joyce's work is subtle, but exudes gravitas.

Accompanying the exhibition are ceramics and sculpture by Anne Morrison, Tom Allan and Shaun McLaren.

The exhibition is almost ready and previews on Sunday 7th, 2-5pm.

Joyce Gunn Cairns Solo Exhibition

We are delighted that all the works for the Joyce Gunn Cairns solo exhibition have now arrived at the gallery.

This is a stunning collection of large and small oil paintings, drawings, sketches and screen prints.

I think it is always a great pleasure to see the stages of work that lead up to a finished oil painting.  We will be exhibiting a large collection of intricate sketches and studies.

Joyce is an artist who works tirelessly and passionately on her chosen subjects.  Her creative figurative works explore many issues and her wildlife studies depict her fascination for the animal world.

She also works closely with writers, artists and musicians who, like me, have the great pleasure of visiting her in her Edinburgh studio.  This is an Aladdin's Cave of creative energy.

Joyce is what I would term a true artist.  She is in her studio seven days a week.  She is her work.  And the passion that goes into it is reflected in the passionate response from the viewer.

Smithy Gallery is greatly honoured to be hosting her latest solo exhibition.

The exhibition previews on Sunday 7th September, 2-5pm.  Champagne and chocolates will be served and the artist will be present.
